Kingston<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Jamaica<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>May 5, 2007<\/span>:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Attendees at the JEF Convention 2007 in Ocho Rios on\u00a0May 5th<\/sup>, 2007were challenged to upgrade their networking skills to keep pace with the threats and opportunities of CSME.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The speech they attended at the conference was entitled \u201cNetworking Strategies for the new Breed of Caribbean Managers.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The workshop was lead by Francis Wade, a Jamaican consultant and President of Framework Consulting In., headquartered in\u00a0Hollywood\u00a0Florida,\u00a0USA.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Mr. Wade, the founder of the 14 year-old firm, has been working with companies in\u00a0Barbados,\u00a0Trinidad\u00a0andJamaica\u00a0to address business issues that have a particularly difficult people dimension.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>During that time he has had to develop some innovative techniques for networking that \u201cviolate accepted wisdom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In his speech, Mr. Wade noted that the old ways of networking \u2013 on the golf course and on the cocktail circuit – were only suited for a small subset of professionals. He said \u201cbusiness-people who force themselves to attend these kinds of events give networking a bad name.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, he advocated an authentic approach that anyone can follow, building on real commitments, rather than manufactured interests.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>He gave the following 10 tips:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1)<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Be Brave<\/strong>: Don\u2019t follow the crowd, and allow yourself to be distinctly different from everyone else<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2)<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Know What You Are Passionate About<\/strong>: Pursue whatever area of interest you have, and become an expert in that, rather than following areas that are popular, \u201clogical\u201d or even areas in which you have current skills but no real interest<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3)<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Drop the\u00a0<\/strong>Miami<\/strong>\u00a0mind<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Think of yourself as aCaribbean\u00a0professional rather than having half your mind in the\u00a0USA,\u00a0Canada\u00a0or\u00a0England<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

4)<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Reach Out from Your Interests<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Take the areas you are passionate about, and find others in theCaribbean\u00a0who share them<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

5)<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Ignore Distractions<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>If someone tells you what you \u201cshould\u201d be doing to network, and it doesn\u2019t fit your natural interests, ignore them!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Also, if the actions you take feel forced or contrived, stop them.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

6)<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Embrace Internet Technology:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>If you have a distrust of new technology or the internet, overcome it, knowing that your future as a professional is inextricably tied to how you are presented in cyberspace<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

7)<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Google Yourself:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Use a Google search to see what is already being said about you on the internet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Make this your baseline<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

8)<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Design an Online Self-Portrait:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Define the online \u201cportrait\u201d of your accomplishments, skills and interests that you would like people to see on the internet<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

9)<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Actively Participate:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Join in and contribute to online discussions related to your areas of interest especially if they are\u00a0Caribbeanbased.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>If they don\u2019t exist today, create them by sending out invitations to regional partners<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

10)<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Write!:\u00a0<\/strong>Find interesting ways to use ezines, blogs and mentions on web-pages to share your thoughts on your authentic areas of interest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Write frequently!<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bottom Line is that professionals must take advantage of the changes coming with CSME and the existence of internet technology to network in a way that feels natural.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>While our literacy rate inJamaica\u00a0puts us at a disadvantage compared to countries such as\u00a0Trinidad\u00a0and\u00a0Barbados, we are often seen as being more assertive and outgoing, and we should use this to our advantage.<\/span><\/p>\n
