Not everyone has what it takes<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Most CEO’s don’t make good leaders of strategic\u00a0planning retreats. Some are just too emotionally invested, dominating other voices. The rest? They often sit back and watch… letting people talk while intending to do what they want to do anyway, once\u00a0the dust has settled.<\/p>\n

Most employees don’t lead retreats well either. They are too concerned with keeping their jobs and trying to make everyone happy. When they aren’t rigorous in how they facilitate, the meeting becomes a lime.<\/p>\n

Here in the Caribbean, these issues can be acute. They turn retreats into little more than “Amen Corners<\/a>“: rubber stamps which stifle innovation and engagement. Or they dissolve\u00a0into talk-shops\u00a0where nothing is decided and business-as-usual is the end-result. In these recessionary times, there is\u00a0simply no time or room for such failures of thought.<\/p>\n

Where do you come in?<\/p>\n

If you are someone who is responsible for having a successful retreat, consider a different definition of success: an event in which each person walks away supporting a final outcome that achieves a new vision for your company.<\/p>\n

You already know that this means winning the hearts and minds of all who attend. After all, when the retreat is over, they are the ones who must willingly make space to execute whatever plan is created.<\/p>\n

In addition, the plan cannot be baked with fairy-dust. It must have its roots in reality, even if it reaches up to touch the sky.<\/p>\n

And, I imagine, you also know that if you lose your team now, it could be lost for an entire year. That would be a disaster.<\/p>\n
